Peer Coaches

Peer Coaches play a pivotal role in supporting first and second year, first-generation college students in the Student Success Coaching Program. Peer Coaches are trained using a national model and receive nationally recognized certifications.

Peer Coaches have the opportunity to advance to the Senior Peer Coach role. Senior Peer Coaches continue to support a cohort of students and have additional programming responsibilities that support the personal and professional development of the Peer Coaching team.

What would you tell your first-year self?

I would tell my first year self that I am exactly where I need to be, everything happens for a reason! I would also encourage myself to be open to new things and experiences, don't be afraid to ask for help, and that it is okay to grow in ways that feel unfamiliar and uncomfortable. Lastly, I would tell my first year self to take care and value myself, as well as the people in my life that I care about; check in on family and friends, and most importantly check in on yourself.

What would you tell your first-year self?

I would tell my first-year self to stop stressing the things that are out of my control. As a first-gen student myself, I understand the pressure to do everything with ease and as perfect as possible but there's beauty in making mistakes and learning.

What would you tell your first-year self?

I’d tell myself you belong and deserve to be here. Your voice, background, and experiences matter. Also asking for help doesn't make you less capable. I would encourage myself to take chances as this time is to explore who you are! As well as never forgetting to take pride in how far you’ve come. You are proof that anything is possible.

What would you tell your first-year self?

To my first year self I would say: "Allow yourself the grace of making mistakes and learning from them. In so many ways, college is much different and more challenging than high school. You're not going to immediately adjust to things perfectly and that's okay. Let the learning process happen and everything will be okay".

    Warren College

Public Health with a concentration in Community Health Sciences and a minor in Chicanx Latinx Studies

What would you tell your first-year self?

I would tell my first year self that everything will work out the way it is supposed to for you. That comparison is really the thief of joy, and your journey is never the same as anyone else's. You will experience hardship in college as a FGLI student, and the amount of hard work you need to put in will be a lot-- but it is all worth it ultimately. Never underestimate yourself and allow room for growth, and to experience this all for yourself but for tus padres too!

  • Samantha Villalpando (She/Her)

    Samantha Villalpando (She/Her)

    Muir College

General Biology with a minor in Economics

What would you tell your first-year self?

I would tell my first year self to embrace the unknown environment you’re in. Make the most out of being lost, new, and having the opportunity to explore a new atmosphere with unfamiliar faces who are going through the same situation. I would also let myself know that everything will get easier, and to keep going, because even though it gets harder before it gets easier, it does get better.
